In its initial guise, the the new-for-1990 911 Turbo combined the newly designed body and chassis design with the existing 3.3-litre Turbo engine as the all-new 3.6-litre engine was not quite ready.

Before installing the existing engine in the 964 shell, it was subtly reworked to make turbo delivery smoother and less prone to lag. In this guise, it produced around 320 bhp. In 1992, Porsche offered a 'Leichtbau' or 'Light Weight' Turbo S model with larger injectors, more aggressive camshafts and higher boost levels to produce 376 bhp. The 86 Leichtbau 911s built also featured lowered suspension, a front strut brace and no power steering.

At the start of 1993, the new 3.6 turbo engine was finally introduced. Derived from the M64 naturally aspirated unit, the single turbo equipped M64/50 produced 355 bhp in standard trim. Available for two years only, the 911 Turbo 3.6 saw a run of less than 1,500 examples. Among the options were the more powerful 'X88' and 36S engines, which saw the power increased by a further 25 bhp.

Right at the end of the 964 production run, Porsche Exclusive used the final Turbo chassis left for a 'Flachbau' or 'Slant Nose' version. Built to customer order, they featured either the flat nose with pop-up headlights for the Japanese market (X83) or integrated headlights similar to those of the 968 model (X85). Of the limited run, Japan received 10, the United States 39 and the rest of the world 27.

In 1995, the 911 Turbo 3.6 was superseded by the Type 993 Turbo, which featured a revised twin-turbo engine and all-wheel drive as standard. The Type M64/50 engine was used for a small run of Type 993 Cabriolet models built to custom order by Porsche Exclusive.
