Chassis:
The very first M63 built, chassis 1701 was immediately pressed into service for the Le Mans Test. Later in the month, it won the 1.3 litre class and placed 11th overall at the Nürburgring. At Le Mans, the clutch failed early in the race and by the eighth hour the replacement clutch also ceased, prompting the car's retirement. Following an outing at Reims later in June, chassis 1701 was not seen in action again until the 1964 Sebring 12 Hours. Fitted with a more conventional push-rod Renault R8 Gordini engine and entered by Autosport International for Paul Richards and Charlie Rainville, it finished 29th. Richards continued to race the M63 for some years to come, winning the 1.3 litre class at the Bahamas Speed Weeks as late as December of 1966. Today, this very important Alpine resides in a Japanese collection.
