Chassis:
Acquired new by Japanese enthusiast Tsunemasu Aoshima, this was one of the last Spice Group C1 cars built. It was fielded for him in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans by Euro Racing. It was painted bright pink and entered for an all-woman driver line-up of Lyn St James, Cathy Muller and Desiré Wilson. During qualifying, the car was damaged by Lyn St James in a hefty accident. With no time to rebuild the existing chassis, the team raced SE89C-008, which had been offered for sale in the paddock. Repainted pink and tagged SE90C-017, it was ready in time to take the start. Sadly, the race lasted just 47 laps until another accident ended the effort.
The original 017 that had been damaged in qualifying was returned to Japan and repaired. Later in the season, it made two further outings in the All Japanese Sports Prototype Championship with an eighth place as the best result. It was repatriated from Japan in 2001 by historic racer David Mercer, who had the car completely restored. He campaigned the car with great success, scoring numerous outright victories in Group C races. It was then acquired by its next custodian in 2010, and he continued to race the car regularly for many years. In 2012, it was reunited with Desiré Wilson at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In 2019, it passed into Swiss hands and more recently was acquired by a Belgian historic racer.
