Chassis:
Completed late in 1963, Chaparral 2 chassis 002 was raced by Jim Hall and Hap Sharp from the final races of 1963 well into 1965 in its original configuration. The car was competitive throughout these seasons scoring numerous victories right up to the end of 1965. For 1966 the car was converted to closed-cockpit 2D specification and raced in the Sebring 12 Hours with little success. A year later it formed the basis for the first 2F. Now renumbered 2F001, it was raced extensively in Europe, crowning a trying season with a win in the BOAC 1000 km race at Brands Hatch in the hands of Phil Hill and Mike Spence.
Jim Hall retained the car and years later restored it back to its original Chaparral 2 spec. In retrospect the car has often been called the 2A but Hall is adamant that the first mid-engined Chaparral was the 2 and that it never had a letter designation like the subsequent evolutions. Chaparral 2, chassis 002, is seen here at the 2005 Monterey Historic Races where Chaparral was the featured marque. It was demonstrated by Jim Hall Jr. and driven briefly by Vic Elford as well. Jim Hall himself can be seen sitting on the car in one of the pictures.
