Chassis:
Driven by Herbert Linge at the 1964 Le Mans Test, this was the first of two eight-cylinder engined 904 Coupes to be seen in public. Not homologated, it had to run in the under three-litre prototype category but nevertheless set the fastest time in its class. In the hands of Richie Ginther and Jo Bonnier, it then won the two-litre prototype class in the Nürburgring 1000 km by placing fifth overall. At Le Mans, it was shared by Edgar Barth and Herbert Linge but failed to reach the finish due to the clutch failing. It was raced by the factory team well into the 1965 season when Bonnier repeated his class win at the 'Ring, this time joined by Jochen Rindt and finishing third overall. At the end of 1965, it was sold on but fitted with a four cylinder engine. In this guise, it made its third appearance in the Nürburgring 1000 km but this time failed to finish. Today the car is owned by a German enthusiast, who usually races the car with a more friendly to run six-cylinder engine. He has, however, also managed to track down one of the very rare Type 771 flat eights and with this engine fitted competed in the 2014 Le Mans Classic.
