Chassis:
The third of three BMW 320s fielded by McLaren North America, this car was pressed into service during the 1978 IMSA Championship. It was built around one of the very last, lightweight shells provided by BMW Motorsport. David Hobbs was tasked to drive chassis 003 and in only its second outing, at Sears Point, he placed the car on pole position and scored an outright win. In 1979 Hobbs drove the car to victory at Hallett and together with Derek Bell he won the Road America 500. Today, this ex-works car is owned by a Bay area BMW enthusiast. He had it carefully prepared for the 2016 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion where BMW was the featured marque. Unfortunately, he ran out of time with the turbocharged engine and raced it with a naturally aspirated M12 engine instead.
