Chassis:
Chassis JR-001 was the first of the two 935/81s built by Joest. It was raced three times by Jochen Mass in the DRM before it was leased and later sold to Gianpiero Moretti. He raced the car for the better part of three seasons in a wide variety of events. For the longer events he was joined by accomplished drivers like Bobby Rahal and Mauro Baldi. Second place finishes at the 1981 Mid-Ohio and Portland IMSA rounds were the car's best results. Moretti held on to the car for several more years after he retired it from contemporary racing in the summer of 1983.
Some ten years later he finally sold the car to a Swiss collector through marque expert Rick Cole. Still unrestored, JR-001 returned to the United States only a few years later. Here it was cosmetically restored to its original, DRM specifications. In 2005 it changed hands at RM Auctions' Monterey Auction for just over $400,000. Three years later, 'Moby Dick' was back at RM and now beat the pre-sale top estimate by $50,000 when it sold for $550,000.
It was acquired by French specialists Equipe Europe, who prepared the car for racing and campaigned it in the Classic Endurance Racing series during the early 2010s. It was then sold on and fully restored to the MOMO colours used when it was raced by Moretti. Fully restored, it was shown at the 2020 Retromobile show.
