Chassis:
Of the seven rolling chassis supplied to Bertone through Stanley H. ‘Wacky’ Arnolt, this is the only fitted with a Coupe body. It was most likely commissioned by Henri Pigozzi, who was the founder of Simca. The build records show the first owner as Henrey Pagezy but that is most likely a mistake as among the many distinct features, the Bertone Coupe boasts Simca taillights. Bertone showed the car at the 1957 and 1958 Turin Motor Shows in the hope of receiving the job of bodying DB4 production car. Aston Martin entrusted the work to Touring instead, and the DB2/4 Bertone Coupe eventually resurfaced in the United States during the mid-1970s. It changed hands several times before it was acquired from the Blackhawk Collection by Roger Karlson in 1987. During his 11-year ownership, he showed the car at Pebble Beach and also sorted the car’s mechanicals. In 2019, the unique car was acquired by a collector, who had Kevin Kay Restorations carry out a concours-grade restoration. The $800,000 job was completed in time for the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where the car won first in class. Already invited to the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, it was consigned to the 2023 RM Sotheby’s New York sale.
