Chassis:
A works car, this chassis was campaigned for Luigi Musso during the 1954 season. He was competitive throughout the year and scored several class wins, including at the Targa Florio and Imola, and also placed third overall in the Mille Miglia. After its season as a factory racer, the year-old Maserati was sold to Argentinean privateer Ricardo Grandio. He raced the car very successfully during the 1955 and 1956 seasons, finishing a commendable third overall in the Buenos Aires 1000 km. Following a succession of South American owners, the car returned to Europe in the early 1980s. A subsequent Italian owner fielded it several times in the Mille Miglia retrospective. In 1998, it passed to its longtime American owner, who continued to race it in historic events on both sides of the Atlantic. For the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where Maserati was the featured marque, chassis 2078 was meticulously restored. The work done was well received and the A6GCS/53 won the Gran Turismo award. After over two decades of single ownership, the ex-works sports racer was announced as one of the early consignments for the RM Sotheby's August, 2019 Monterey sale.
