The second A6G/54 built, this is the first of 20 examples with a Coupe body by Zagato. Retained by Maserati, it was campaigned at several rallies by the likes of Attilio Buffa and in Munaron. It was also raced by works driver Luigi Musso's brother Giuseppe. In May of 1956, it served as a practice car for Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson for the Mille Miglia. Jenkinson later chronicled his experience with this car in the June, 1956 issue of Motorsport magazine. In the race itself, the car was campaigned by Arnaldo Bellini with Nicolo Carosio, who finished 117th overall and 25th in class. Repainted and slightly modified, it was finally sold by the factory in February of 1959. The first private owner was Turin based Carlo Peroglio but shortly thereafter it was on its way to the United States. It changed hands several times before joining a Japanese collection. It was subsequently repatriated to Europe by Dutch dealers Rudy Pas and Marcel Roks. They had the car completely restored by Trevor Stokes. In 1998, it was acquired by a German enthusiast. From this longterm ownership, it was consigned to the 2019 RM Sotheby's Villa Erba sale.
