Chassis:
One of two McLaren M6Bs acquired by Ford, this car formed part of the 'Blue Oval's' 1968 Can-Am effort. It was fitted with an all-aluminium big-block V8 that was tuned for the purpose by Shelby American. Chassis 50-12 was then raced for Shelby by Peter Revson in the Can-Am rounds at Road America, Bridgehampton, Edmonton, Laguna Seca and Riverside but with little luck. At the end of the year, the team travelled to Japan for the Fuji 200 World Challenge Race. Revson impressed with an outright victory, which was the first of Ford's 1968 Can-Am campaign. The victory was not enough to convince Ford to continue the Can-Am program. Ahead of the 1969 season, this M6B was sold by Ford to privateer racer Stan Szarkowicz, who raced the car a further couple of years using a more conventional Chevrolet V8. Its contemporary racing career was over after a fire damaged the M6B in 1972. It was eventually rebuilt to its original configuration by subsequent owner John Collins. It was sold again in 2000, and subsequently regularly raced in historic events. In 2019, it was consigned to the Bonhams Quail Lodge auction.
