Chassis: 0132A
Built in the fall of 1951, this is the second of five 340 Americas fitted with coupe bodywork by Vignale. Finished in a two-tone paintscheme, it featured several unique features like the chrome trim, slotted tail lights, twin air-intakes, front fender slots and six exhaust pipes. Early in 1952, the car was delivered to Ferrari's Rome agency, Ponti & Mambretti. It was shortly thereafter acquired by Lebanese-born, Philippine playboy Johnny Ysmael. He reportedly paid a whopping $25,000 for the car. During this period, the car was also featured in Road & Track magazine. In 1953, chassis 0132A was sold to William Doheny, the owner of the Union Oil Company. His ownership was brief and the next custodian was noted Southern California sports car dealer and gentleman racer Ernie McAfee. He raced the car at tracks like Willow Springs. McAfee eventually replaced the exotic Ferrari V12 with an easier to service Chevrolet V8. During the late 1950s, the Vignale Coupe was sold to fellow Californian Jim Walter, along with the original drivetrain. Walter used the car on the road into the 1960s before placing it in storage. A restoration was started and the original drivetrain was re-installed but the work was never completed. From Walter's estate, chassis 0132A was finally consigned to the 2019 Bonhams The Quail Lodge Auction. Offered in time warp condition and on the market for the first time in six decades, it topped the sale at $3.6 million.
