Chassis:
Sold new to Australian privateer racer Bib Stillwell, this is the seventh customer D-Type built. Stillwell raced the car with considerable success in a wide variety of events with winning the 1956 Bathurst Road Racing Championship as one of the highlights. The car was also briefly prepared for land speed record runs. It was raced by Stillwell through to March of 1957 when it was acquired by the Australian Motorists Peter Company (AMPOL) for Jack Davey to race. Unfortunately, he never got around to it and the following year, XKD 520 was sold to Frank Gardner. He showed that the car was still competitive, placing 2nd at Barthurst and winning the Mount Druitt Hill Climb. Before the end of the year, it was sold once more, this time to David Finch. He continued to campaign the car well into the 1960s by which time it had been fitted with a factory supplied 3.8-ltire engine and a long nose crafted in Australia.
Following its lengthy spell 'Down Under', it was bought by future Le Mans winner Richard Attwood in 1967. He kept the car for a decade when it was purchased by Sir Angus Spencer Nairn. He had the car recommissioned by Chris Keith-Lucas, who was with Lynx at the time and later founded CKL Developments. During his 25+ years of ownership Spencer Nairn used the car sparingly, competing in track-days and Mille Miglia retrospective. In 2004, the car finally changed hands again and eventually and fittingly ended up in the ownership of Australian collector Peter Harburg. In 2014, the most recent custodian bought the car and once again used it sparingly. From his stable, it was consigned to headline the 2020 RM Sotheby's Paris sale.
