Chassis:
Delivered new as a road car with a red finish and tan interior was sold new to Peter Kalikow but he returned the car almost immediately to Ron Spangler. The Daytona was then acquired early in 1972 by Kirk F. White. He sent the car to Holman & Moody to have it upgraded to Group 4 competition specification. Specialists Traco were tasked with upgrading the engine but found the V12 fitted to chassis 14065 was not quite right. So instead, the engine fitted in White's road going Daytona was used as a basis. This had already shown its worth as it had been driven to victory in the 1971 Cannonball Run by Brock Yates and Dan Gurney. Traco managed to tweak the engine to produce 450 bhp, which brought it on par with the most powerful factory sanctioned Series 3 Competiziones.
Finished in the same Marathon Oil colours as White's 512 M sports prototype, the Group 4 Daytona was entered in the 1972 Sebring 12 Hours. David Hobbs was the lead driver and the original plan was to have NASCAR racer Bobby Allison join him. He withdrew at the last minute and Hobbs was partnered instead by Skip Scott. Beating the three 'official' factory Daytona Competiziones entered, Hobbs qualified the blue Daytona 18th. Sadly the factory bolts in the driveshaft were not quite up to the task and were sheared off after three hours of racing. White did not race the Daytona again. Instead, it was sold back to Spangler and then passed through various hands before it was sold to Swiss collector Engelbert Stieger. He had the car repainted red with blue and white racing stripes.
Following a spell in Japan, it was restored to its original colours by next custodian Lorne Leibel. By that time, the original Traco developed engine had been removed from the car after a failure. In more recent years, the car returned to Europe and was meticulously prepared by DK Engineering. With the engine that was used at Sebring still with the car, it was consigned to the online-only RM Sotheby's Shift/Monterey auction.
