Chassis:
A US-market export model, this 300 SL was finished in Fire Engine Red and fitted from the factory with Rudge knock-off wheels. The first known owner of the car was A.E. Knowles of Napa Valley, California. During Knowles' ownership, he one day crossed the Golden Gate bridge when a maintenance worked dropped a bucket of paint on the car by accident at the toll plaza. The incident earned him a re-paint of the car courtesy of the city of San Francisco. During the 1970s, it changed hands several times before it was acquired by Wayne Stoller in 1979. It remained in his collection for four decades in unrestored condition. Shortly after acquiring what may very well be the last unrestored Rudge wheel equipped 300 SL, he consigned the car to the August, 2020 Gooding & Co. Geared Online sale.
