Chassis:
Finished in white, this 300 SL was sold new to Russell Cowles of Minneapolis, Minnesota. By 1977, a subsequent owner placed the car in long term storage in his Compton, California garage. At that time, it had been repainted red and had 54,216 miles on the odometer. It was eventually discovered in 1997 by marque expert Jerry Hjeltness, who was tasked to look for a great 300 SL by a customer. Hjeltness spent the next ten months to restored the car from the ground up. The owner has since only used the car sparingly, showing it several concours and driving it on the road only on nice days. Still in as-restored condition, it was consigned to the fall 2020, online-only Gooding & Company Geared Online sale.
