Chassis:
This 550 RS Spyder was delivered new to talented German racer Theo Helfrich. He would go on to campaign the car all around Europe for several seasons. In 1959, it was acquired by an American soldier, who was stationed in Germany. Two years later, he brought the 550 RS Spyder with him to the United States. Chassis 550-0036 was subsequently raced in SCCA events in the Upper Midwest. By the mid 1960s, it as retired from contemporary racing and eventually acquired by the late Dr. Gary Quast in December of 1972. He would go on to own the car for 50 years. During this period, it was comprehensively restored by Willison Werkstatt in Florida. It is currently fitted with a period correct Fuhrmann engine with a serial number just one digit from the original. Having covered just 100 miles since the restoration, it was consigned by the Gary Quast estate to the 2022 Bonhams Amelia Island sale. It topped the auction and found a new custodian for a remarkable $4.2 million.
