Chassis:
Completed early in 1956, this 550 RS Spyder was painted red with white darts. It is understood that the first owner was Swiss enthusiast Heinz Schiller even though it debuted at Monza in the hands of his compatriot Werner Brändli. Schiller later also extensively drove the 550 RS Spyder, which had a distinct, white painted bonnet. In 1958, it was sold to another Swiss gentleman racer, Edouard Margairaz. He used the car at several hill climbs but it was not seen again from the summer of 1958. The car is believed to have remained in Switzerland until it was acquired by German specialist Heribert Küke. At that point, it had been extensively modified with a 718 RS style body and a larger, more powerful engine. In this guise, it was used in historic events by Küke until he sold the car in 1982. Last seen in action in 1989, it was then stored for over 30 years in the garage of the long-term, British owner. It re-emerged in 2022 when the barn-find Porsche 550 RS Spyder was consigned to the Gooding London Auction. Before the sale, it was closely examined and it still has its original chassis, while red paint was found underneath the silver of the body panels that were not updated to RS60 guise. The engine fitted has a number that corresponds with that of RS61 chassis 718-046 and was most likely used at Le Mans in 1961.
