Chassis:
The fifth of seven MP4-16s built, this car was first pressed into service by David Coulthard at the San Marino Grand Prix. The Scot snatched pole position but eventually had to settle for second after Ralf Schumacher jumped him at the start. After a fifth at Barcelona, Coulthard put in a stellar performance to take a victory in the Austrian Grand Prix after starting seventh. At the Monaco Grand Prix, Coulthard was due to start on pole position but for a fuelling issue saw him relegated to the back of the grid. He fought back to finish fifth and setting the fastest lap of the race. Häkkinen also raced chassis 05, scoring a third place finish in the Canadian Grand Prix. For the last races of the year, the MP4-16-05 served as a T car. Eventually sold to a private customer, this MP4-16 is complete but fitted with a dummy engine. In 2022, it was consigned to the RM Sotheby's Munich sale.
