Chassis:
Ordered new by the Automovel Club do Brasil, this A6GCS was appropriately finished in yellow with green seats. Its first private owner was Mario Valentim Dos Santos, who debuted the car with a class win at the Gran Premio di Interlagos in January of 1951. He would continue to campaign the car in local events with considerable success throughout the 1951 season. At some point in 1952, the Monofaro was returned to Maserati where it was upgraded and fitted with a dual overhead camshaft head. The work was ready in December and Valentim Dos Santos and subsequent owners go on to race the car for several more years with great success. Its final race was in December of 1957 and it then it disappeared from view until it was discovered by Colin Crabbe in a Sao Paolo yard in 1972.
Shipped to the United Kingdom, it was sold to Alan Smith of Derby. He performed a superficial restoration and it then passed through dealer Danny Margulies to San Francisco-based enthusiast Sid Colberg in 1978. It received further mechanical attention from the late, great Phil Reilly before Colberg used the car extensively in events like the Mille Miglia and Monterey Historic Races. After a 26-year owernship, Colberg finally sold the rare Maserati in 2004 to a collector specialising in Italian sports cars. It was subsequently submitted to a comprehensive restoration and continued to be used during the next 18 years. Having had just two private owners since 1978, the striking A6GCS was finally offered for sale again at the 2023 RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island Auction.
