Completed in October of 1953, this A6GCS/53 was commissioned by American importer Tony Pompeo as a demonstrator. Once the car arrived in New York, a group of potential customers and journalists were invited to watch a demonstration of factory driver Juan Manual Fangio at the wheel of the brand new Maserati around Thomson Speedway in Connecticut. Chassis 2053 was subsequently shown at the World Motor Sports Show at Madison Square Garden before it was sold to Donald McKnought in February of 1954. It was raced by McKnought at Sebring together with Wlliam Eager and later in the year also appeared at other events. In 1955, it was sold to Fritz Koster, who did not actually race the car. Three years later, brothers Ben and James Diaz bought the car and campaigned the car into the 1960 season. At the end of its long career, it was fitted with a Chevrolet V8 engine.

Following its contemporary racing career, the Maserati was acquired by Gus Buscham in 1961. Without an engine fitted, it was bought by a teacher by the name of Louis Casazza in 1965. He fitted another small-block V8 and would retain the car for 24 years. In 1989, it passed to Maserati expert Frank Mandarano, who had a purpose built replacement engine fitted. Following a spell in Japan, it was sold to Dr. Julio Palmaz. He had the Chevrolet gearbox and rear axle replaced by correct Maserati replacement parts to bring the car back its original specification. The next custodian managed to source a period engine, stamped 2067 that was fitted instead of the newly built 1990s engine. During the 2010s, the A6GCS/53 joined a Belgian collection and it was then consigned to the 2023 RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island Auction.
