Chassis:
Through Auto-Becker, this 250 GT SWB California Spyder was sold new to Ernst Lautenschlager. It was built to full competition specification with an alloy body and a hot version of the Tipo 168 V12 engine. Finished in silver with a beige interior, it was raced with considerable success by Lautenschlager in local events during the 1961 and 1962 seasons. In August of 1962, chassis 2383GT was sold to Wolfgang Seidel and then passed to another German owner, who had the car painted red. After one more German owner, it moved to the United States in 1967. Following two long term owners, it was acquired by a prominent UK-based collector in 1998. He raced the car briefly before he had it restored in 2001 and re-painted gun-metal grey. During the following years, it was campaigned in historic events but from the 2010s, its appearances have been restricted to concours d’elegance and demonstrations.
In 2025, it was consigned to Gooding Christie’s to headline the flagship Pebble Beach Auctions. Bidding for 2383GT far exceeded the $20 million estimate as a new world record for a California Spyder sold at auction was set at $25.3 million. The car has come full circle as the new custodian is a German collector.
