Chassis:
Painted French Racing Blue, this 340 America was entered in the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans by American distributor Luigi Chinetti for local heroes André Simon and Lucien Vincent. The French pairing did well and finished fifth overall and second in class. Following several more appearances in France, it was shipped to the United States where it was acquired by Ernie McAfee. Its subsequent owners continued to race the car through the end of the decade. In 1958 a more practical Chevrolet V8 was fitted. Sadly, it was crashed not much later and rolled. The Italian coachwork was replaced with a fibreglass body produced by Devin. It then passed through the hands of John Mecom and the Hall-Shelby sports car dealership. It then disappeared until it was famously offered on Ebay as a Devin special in 2006. It was spotted by specialist Tom Shaughnessy, who recognised the 340 America for what it really was. After buying the car for a bargain, he then also managed to track down the original engine. As a project, the original chassis and engine were sold in 2013. The next custodian had Ferrari Classiche restore the Vignale Berlinetta to its original splendour. Shortly after the work was completed, chassis 0202A was shown at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Four years later, it was entrusted to Gooding for the annual Pebble Beach Auctions.
