Chassis:
Built on chassis M8A/1, this M8B was raced throughout the 1969 Can-Am season by Bruce McLaren. He scored five of of his six wins in 1969 with this car. At the end of a perfect season for the team, Bruce McLaren was crowned Can-Am champion for a second time. Bruce McLaren did crash M8B at Riverside, requiring a rebuild. It was subsequently sold to Oscar Kovalevski to race in the 1970 Can-Am. He also fielded the car in the SCCA events, scoring wins at Road Atlanta and North Cumberland. The following year, it was campaigned by Tony Adamowicz. Its final contemporary outings came in 1972 when it was raced by Warren Agor and Kent Fellows.
The car then passed to Lance Smith and placed in storage. During the 1980s, it was damaged in a fire and not fully restored until it was acquired by an American enthusiast who has a formidable collection of McLarens. During the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, it was demonstrated by Derek Bell as part of McLaren’s 60th anniversary celebrations. In 2026, it was entered in The Amelia where it was awarded ‘Best of Show – Concours de Sport.’
