Chassis:
A new MP4/1 built for the 1982 season, this chassis was reserved exclusively for John Watson. He debuted with a sixth at the South African Grand Prix and then placed second in Brazil. He would go on to famously win the inaugural United States Grand Prix at Detroit. Watson also was on the podium with chassis 5 in Canada and during the Caesar Palace Grand Prix held in Las Vegas. Ahead of the 1983 season, it was upgraded to MP4/1C configuration but served as a spare only. Later in the year, the all-new TAG Porsche V6 engine was fitted. Watson brought the car back out in this configuration but with little luck. Superseded by the MP4/2, this car was eventually sold off and prepared for historic racing. It was acquired by the current custodian during the late 2010s, and has been used in historic racing since 2019.
