Chassis:
A Series II BMW 507 Roadster, this example is one of very few with a period racing history. It was campaigned in several hill-climbs during 1958 and 1959 by Helmut Glöckler, who had famously created the first mid-engined Porsche sports racers. It eventually made its way to the United States and between 1974 and 2014, it was owned by two brothers from California. Also part of their collection was the ex-Elvis Presley 507 Roadster. Both cars re-emerged from long-term storage in 2014 and this chassis was comprehensively restored by BMW Classic. At this time, it was uprated with front disc brakes, reproduction Rudge knock-off wheels and a period Becker Mexico radio. The restoration was completed in 2016 and since then, it was shown at the BMW 100th anniversary celebration during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion and also starred in Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedian in Cars Getting Coffee. Offered publicly for the first time in 50 years, chassis 70089 was consigned to the 2024 Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions.
