Chassis:
Built for West Coast distributor John van Neumann, this is the second-to-last 550 Spyder produced. As such, it includes some features that would become standard on the subsequent 550A like the louvres in the rear fenders. It also features a reinforced chassis and was finished in silver with red darts on the fenders. Von Neumann had acquired 550-0089 for Richie Ginther to race. He campaigned the car in a handful events in 1956 and 1957 before it was sold on to Jack West late in 1957. West was more prolific with the car and competed with some success in at least 20 races during the 1957 and 1958 seasons. It was subsequently raced once by Katherine ‘Sunnie’ Baker, and then changed hands several times over the next three decades. In 1996, it was repatriated to Germany by Herbert Handlbauer and then joined the formidable collection of Dutch enthusiast Albert Westerman. He commissioned a bare-metal restoration before racing the car in a variety of events around Europe. Following another spell in German hands, it was more recently brought back to the United States. Maintained by the Road Scholars, it has been used extensively including on a ten-day tour through Europe. Although currently fitted with a replacement engine built to correct spec, the matching numbers Typ 547 flat is still with the car. Boasting a freshly re-painted rear-deck, the second-to-last 550 Spyder was consigned to the 2024 RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction.
