One of 14 examples finished in signal red, this 904 Carrera GTS was sold new to Spanish racer Juan Fernández. He used the car extensively, particularly in hill climbs, scoring nine overall victories in 1964 and a further eleven the following year. His exploits would earn Fernández the nick-name El Rey de Las Montañas or King of the Mountains. After stepping up to a 911 and 906, the young Spaniard returned the 904 Carrera GTS to the factory. It was subsequently briefly owned by German industrialist Alfried Krupp before it was sold on the United States. Between 1993 and 2001, it was back in German hands and then joined the Blackhawk Collection. In 2013, it fittingly returned to Spanish ownership. Fitted with a Capricorn replacement engine, it was raced extensively in historic events like the Le Mans Classic. The next custodian acquired the car in 2021 and re-fitted the matching numbers Typ 587/3 flat four. This highly original 904 Carrera GTS was consigned three years later to the 2024 Broad Arrow Auctions Monterey Jet Center sale.
