Chassis:
The very first Esperante GTR-1 built, this car served as the development and homologation chassis. As such, it was the only GTR-1 issued with a full 17-character VIN number. It was also fitted with road-car accessories and trim and equipped with a 5.3-litre Roush V8 engine. It was initially painted blue and then re-finished in yellow before it was shown at the Autosport Show in 1997. Never raced, chassis 001 remained in England after the GTR-1 program had ended. It was shipped to Panoz for a complete restoration, which was commissioned by JMB Classic, who also run two of the GTR-1s in historic racing. In 2018, the car was acquired by a family of Panoz enthusiasts directly from Don Panoz. The restoration work then started in earnest and it took the Panoz staff three years to complete the work. Since the restoration, it was only used in two track days before it was offered for sale by Californian dealer Fantasy Junction in 2024.
