Chassis:
Completed in October of 1955, this 550 RS Spyder was sold new to Michigan based racer Jack F. Manting. He acquired the 550 to replace the 356 that he had previously raced. Manting first raced his new car from March of 1956 with considerable success in local SCCA events. He would continue to campaign the car through to the summer of 1959. Chassis 0072 was sold shortly thereafter and then entered long term ownership with Archie Walker in 1962. Over two decades later, it was acquired from the Walker family by Jack Reuter, who had the car sympathetically restored. In 1992, it joined the collection of German enthusiast Dieter Aumann. Beautifully maintained during the next 32 years, it retains the matching-numbers engine and gearbox. Along with the rest of the Aumann Collection, the 550 RS Spyder was consigned to the 2024 RM Sotheby’s Munich sale.
