Chassis:
In December of 1965, this GT40 was delivered to Shelby American for final assembly to Mk II specification. Painted white with a black nose, it was entered in the 1966 Sebring 12 Hours for Walt Hansgen and Mark Donohue. The American pairing finished third overall on what was an all-Ford podium. Chassis GT40P/1032 was then repainted a Mustang production colour called Emberglo for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Entered by Holman & Moody, it was one of eight GT40s due to compete. To differentiate it from the sister car, DayGlo green patches were added to this car. It was fielded for Mark Donohue and Paul Hawkins. It was an eventful race for this car as a half-shaft broke on the opening lap and it would later loose its tail on the Mulsanne straight. Transmission issues with four hours to go proved the fatal blow for GT40P/1032.
Following its retirement from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it was repaired and used for display purposes at events like the Paris Motor Show and the Monza Auto Show. Late in 1967, it was repatriated to the United States and re-painted in a colour combination similar but not identical to the Le Mans winning Mk II. At some point in 1968, it was donated Tony Hulman Jr. for display in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. At the time, it was a non-runner and over the following decades, it was regularly displayed and also featured in several magazines. During the second half of the 2000s, it was decided to restore the car to its Le Mans colour configuration. While the initial idea was for a cosmetic restoration only, the project eventually turned into a comprehensive rebuild to full running order. Once the work was completed, it was shown at the 2011 Concours of America and then demonstrated at the 2023 IMSA race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by Conor Daly.
During 2024, it was announced that it was consigned with a selection of other non-Indy 500 related machinery in the collection to RM Sotheby’s. It will be offered for public sale for the first time ever, at the 2025 RM Sotheby’s Miami sale.
