Chassis:
Produced in the summer of 1978, this Group 5 BMW 320 was sold new to Schnitzer Motorsport. Here it was fitted with Schnitzer’s own turbocharged version of the four-cylinder BMW engine. For the final four rounds of the 1978 DRM Championship, it was entrusted to Harald Ertl. He won outright at the Norisring and scored enough the secure the championship title for himself and the Schnitzer Motorsport team. In 1979, it was raced by Mandred Winkelhock in Rodenstock colours. He won two Division 2 races, at the Norisring and Zandvoort. For 1981, it was entrusted to Harald Grohs and Willi Siller before it was entered at Macau. Fitted with a naturally aspirated version of the engine, it was driven to victory by Hans-Joachim Stuck. The car was sold and remained locally, where it was raced through to the 1988 season by successive drivers. Chassis R1-26 was eventually repatriated to Europe and restored to full running order by Belgian specialists Qvick. Effectively ready to go racing, this rare turbocharged BMW 320 Group 5 was consigned to the 2025 Bonhams Cars Les Grandes Marques du Monde a Paris sale.
