Completed in January of 1956, this 300 SL was equipped with every sports option available in the Mercedes-Benz catalog. These included the special NSL camshaft that added 20 bhp, revised shock absorbers and springs, centre-lock Rudge disc wheels and a 3.42:1 rear axle. The person that ticked all those boxes was Parisian industrialist and future Olympic shooting champion, Claude Foussier. Ordered through Charles Delcroix, the 300 SL was finished in Graphitgrau with a natural leather interior. Foussier kept the car until 1961, when it was sold to Jean Piger. A formidable collector, he kept the car for over five decades, regularly declining offers to buy. He finally caved and sold the graphite grey 300 SL in 2014. At that point, it had not run for 11 years. The new owner brought the car home to Germany and placed it in his basement garage. It was left untouched and wrapped in plastic storage bubble. In 2023, the German owner showed the car to a Parisian enthusiast, who was immediately keen to buy the car. As had been the case, this proved to be a difficult prospect. The deal was finally done, and the still untouched 300 SL was returned to Paris. Late in 2025, it was ‘discovered’ by Artcurial Motorcars and consigned to the 2026 Automobile Legends sale. During this process, it was carefully examined and it was determined that the 300 SL had never been apart and still sported its original graphite grey paint. Over its 70-year life span, it had covered a mere 34,000 km.
