Chassis:
Through Baron Emanuel ‘Toulo’ de Grafenried’s Lausanne Ferrari concessionaire Italauto, this 250 GT SWB was sold new to a Mr. Zimmermann. It was built using a lightened steel body and fitted with a competition specification gearbox, a shortened 8x32 final drive, Miletto shock absorbers and a 100-litre fuel tank. The three-litre V12 engine was equipped with Weber 40 DCL6 carburettors, high compression heads and an Abarth competition exhaust system. In this configuration, the Colombo unit was rated at 243 hp. Chassis 2177GT was finished in Rosso Rubino Chiaro or Light Ruby Red and upholstered with black leather. It may have been raced for its original owner in 1961 but was definitely campaigned by next custodian Armand Boller. He fielded the car in the 1962 Ollon-Villars Hillclimb where he finished fifth in class. For the 1963 season, Boller upgraded to a 250 GTO and sold the SWB to compatriot Walter Ringgenberg. He campaigned the car at select for two more years and it was then sold to Bob Grossman, who was a prominent American Ferrari dealer and accomplished racer. Shortly thereafter, it was sold to Dudley Cunningham, who used it regularly in SCCA events. In 1975, it was acquired by Jim Riff, who completely restored the car and then regularly showed it at Ferrari Club of America events with great results. The next custodian was Tom Byrnes, who raced the car extensively during the early 1990s. In 1996, it was repatriated to Europe and eventually repainted yellow. In the early 2000s, it moved to a United Kingdom-based collection. Chassis 2177GT was finally re-painted in its distinct Rosso Rubino Chiaro before it was consigned to headline the 2026 Gooding Christie’s Retromobile auction.
