Chassis: 84642
Completed in 1990, this F40 was acquired new by former Renault F1 team manager Jean Sage. The Frenchman was no stranger to the F40 as he ran the IMSA programme during this period for French importer Charles Pozzi. Through his employer, he commissioned this F40 in desirable non-cat, non-adjust configuration. In 1994, Sage sent the road-going F40 to Michelotto, who had been responsible for creating the F40 LM competition cars that competed in IMSA. At the Padua workshop, chassis 84642 was converted to the slightly milder CSAI GT specification, while retaining its road-legal status. Among the changes were in the installation of roller-bearing IHI turbos and a lightweight exhaust system. Lightened front and rear clamshells, and 17-inch OZ wheels were also fitted. The end result was a weight saving of 136 kg and the addition of 49 hp. After the upgrades were completed, Sage initially continued to use the car on the road. In October of 1994, it was entered in a round of the Ferrari 348 Challenge. Its next outing was the April, 1995 Paul Ricard BPR round where it qualified 21st out of 38 entries, despite being essentially still a road car. In June of that same year, it was returned to Michelotto for a check-over and then received its 15,000 km service at Pozzi. Sage would retain the car into 1996 and it was then sold to the United Kingdom. Running with the private registration number ‘40 F’, it has continued to be used on the road ever since. At some point, the revised exhaust system in turbos were replaced by stock items to improve drivability. Still boasting a unique specification and with under 23,000 km on the odometer, the ex-Jean Sage F40 was consigned to the 2026 RM Sotheby’s Woodcote Park Auction.
