Towards the end of 1940, it looked like the axis (Germany and Italy) were on verge of winning the War. To celebrate this, the German sporting authority proposed a rally between Rome and Berlin to be held in 1941. To participate BMW sent three rolling 328 chassis to Touring to be fitted with light weight and streamlined Spider bodies. Apart from the obvious lack of a roof, the Spiders looked very similar to the Mille Miglia winning coupes. The rally was never held and today the sole surviving Touring Spider remains as one of very reminders of the plan.
