Chassis:
Chassis 01R was the original F1 GTR prototype, which was pressed into service for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing had originally been allocated 08R but that had been needed to replace one of the Gulf cars that had been crashed heavily in an accident at Jarama. The car was engineered by Lanzante and driven by Lehto, Sekiya and Dalmas. In qualifying it was already the quickest McLaren and during the very wet race, an epic drive by Lehto gave it the edge and ultimately the victory.
Immediately after the historic Le Mans victory, chassis 01R was demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The F1 GTR was retained by McLaren and later proudly displayed on the 'boulevard' of the McLaren Technical Centre. It was started every six months until 2005 but it was not driven again until the launch of the 2013 F1 car. All that was really needed to bring it back to life was a clean-up of the fuel system. In March of 2013, it made its first public driving appearance when it was demonstrated during the Goodwood Press Day by a McLaren technician. This served as a preview of the McLaren 50th anniversary celebrations planned for the Festival of Speed in the summer.
