Featured is one of three cars equipped with a Frua Spider body inspired by the A6 GCS 'Monofaro' racing cars. After a brief spell in Italy, the car was sold to California in the 1950s. Some time later the Maserati engine was replaced by an easier to maintain American V8 and eventually the car disappeared. One day a number of car enthusiasts were so busy talking about cars in a diner they did not notice the waitress waiting to take their order. To break up the conversation she said she also owned a classic car; a Maserati no less. After her shift was over, the skeptic group followed her to a small garage where under 25 years of dust they discovered the Frua Spider.

After some negotiating, the car was bought by its current owner. He had it shipped back to Modena, Italy, where Maserati expert Adolfo Orsi set out to completely restore the car. It was ready in time to be shown at the 2006 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. Orsi's work was promptly awarded with the Trofeo Ruoteclassiche for the most sensitive restoration. Of the three cars equipped with this design, the featured s/n 2017 is the only one 'out in the open', with 2015 being destroyed and 2018 hidden away somewhere in Cuba. The car was then shipped back to the United States where it starred at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Late in 2018, it was announced as one of the early headliners of the 2019 Bonhams Scottsdale sale.
