Chassis:
This is the first of two 300 SLRs fitted with the Karl Wilfert designed coupe bodywork. It was extensively tested and run in the practice sessions of the Swedish Grand Prix, Tourist Trophy and Targa Florio. After Mercedes' withdrawal from racing, chassis 0007/55 was used on the road by Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Since then the fixed-head 300 SLRs have been commonly referred to as the Uhlenhaut Coupes. The company's talented chief engineer likened the car to Rita Hayworth and is rumoured to have once completed the 2.5-hour journey between Stuttgart and Munich in less than an hour. Today the car is still owned by Mercedes-Benz and displayed proudly in the company's new museum.
