This Delahaye 175 S was ordered new by Sir John Gaul, who sent it, along with a Rolls-Royce, to Saoutchik. Here it was fitted with a roadster body, following one of the coach-builder's most extravagant designs. The shape is believed to have been inspired by the Lockheed Constellation airliner, which was a personal favourite of Gaul. Although based in London, Gaul brought his Saoutchik Roadster to many of the great concours in France and Italy. He won awards for the car in Paris, Monte Carlo and San Remo.

After a five year ownership period, Gaul sold the car to an even more colourful figure; British film star Diana Dors. Eventually the car ended up in the United States. By the 1970s it was in Colorado where maintenance prompted the owner to replace the Dubonnet front-end and the engine with an Oldsmobile Toronado drivetrain. Shortly after the car passed into its most recent ownership a full restoration was undertaken, bringing back to its former glory. Unfortunately the original engine could not be located but a correct replacement engine was fitted.

The work was completed in 2007 and the one-off Delahaye 175 S debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It was immediately awarded best in class, which was followed by another class win at Amelia Island. Early in 2010 the original engine was located but as it is in need of some work, it has not yet been installed in the car. The owner has decided to offer the car together with the original engine in the RM Auctions' 2010 Sports & Classics of Monterey sale. The auctioneers' experts estimate it will sell for a hefty $4-6 million.
