    Its really not that bad.
    Dodge Magnum RT (hemi) 17/24mpg
    Compared to performance cars example:
    Jaguar XK8 17/24
    Lancer EVO 18/26
    Mustang Cobra 16/24

Ha even look at the S2000
    S2000 20/25
People need to stop complaining about these V8s "sucking gas" because anything made for performance is going to eat gas...

    Comparing like for like:

Popular vehicles in the UK: Imperial (US)
    Ford Fiesta 1.6 - 43mpg (56)
    VW Golf TDI - 52mpg (62)
    Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 - 37mpg (44)
    BMW 318i - 39mpg (47)
    Renault Espace 1.9dCi - 41mpg (49)
    Nissan X-Trail 2.0 - 26mpg (31)
    BMW X5 4.0 - 20mpg (24)

What kind of mpgs do popular American cars get?
I'd reckon there will be a lot more in the 20s than in the 30s and 40s.
    Thanks for all the fish

    1) can any of those cars compare to the perfomance of the "gas guzzlers"? no...
    2)most of those are diesel

Here like Sandwich said lets compare apples to apples.
How about popular perfomance cars? (popular in my area)
    Corvette Z06 19/27
    BMW M3 16/24
    Mustang Cobra 16/24
    Mustang GT/Mach1 17/25
Camaro SS/Z28 18/27 (same for Trans AM)
    04 Pontiac GTO 18/27
    Honda S2000 20/25
    Toyota Supra turbo 18/23
    Acura NSX 17/24
    Ferrari 360 11/16
    Porche 911 Turbo 15/22
    911 GT3 15/23
    Nissan 350Z 20/27

Isnt it ironic that the cars with the "technology" get worse gas milage than the cars with the "old technology?" On top of that the "old tech" ones beat most of the "new tech" ones.

and another thing, i'd bet that an 1/10 scale gas RC car gets well over any other car's MPG. You know what though? That car can't carry people, tow things, be comfortable, or do any of the things we expect of a real car. It gets great mileage though!

This is your arguement, in my eyes. I doubt I'm alone.

One more thing, since I think this is so ****nig stupid:

My german car, that's GERMAN, as in GERMANGERMANGERMANNOTBRITISHNOTAMERICANNOTJAPANESE BUTGERMANGERMANGERMANGERMANMCGERMANYGERMANSTEINSKI GERMANIKOV

gets 22 mpg in combined, 27 mpg highway, and less than 22 in city driving. This is a german car. GERMAN. NOT AMERICAN. GERMANTASTIC. GERMANY IS IN EUROPE. STILL. What does this mean? That's in imperial too, so you're looking at 19 MPG over there, or so.

I don't understand, how could a european car possibly suck ass at gas mileage? OH WAIT, because it's a high performance car. American or not, it is not an economy car. What's the mileage on an M3? How about a corvette? How about an SL500? hmmmmmmmmmm how does a focus compare to a alfa 157 or whatever the hatch is over there? My bet is that it's pretty close, if the nod doesn't go to the Ford.

Its not my fault both of you missed the point completely.

I don't want to compare performance.

I want to compare the typical fuel consumption of cars that average people buy in their thousands.

I know what cars are popular in the UK: cars like the ones I listed.
Can you work out why they are popular?

I know that high performance engines from Europe use a lot of fuel, but that was never part of my argument.

Seeing as you haven't provided the data I wanted, I looked up the USAs top selling vehicles (August 2003):

Fuel Comsumption: worst in range/ best in range. (Imperial gallons)
    Ford F150 13/16
    Cheverolet Silverado 13/18
    Dodge Ram 13/17
    Toyota Camry 24/28
    Honda Accord 25/28
    Ford Explorer 16/17
    Toyota Corolla/ Matrix 25/34
    Ford Taurus 27/-
    Honda Civic 26/39
    Chevrolet Impala 23/26

Compared to the UK top 10 (July 2004)
    Ford Focus 32/51
    Renault Megane 32/52
    Vauxhall Corsa 35/60
    Vauxhall Astra 31/49
    Peugeot 206 35/65
    Ford Fiesta 44/65
    Volkswagen Golf 26/57
    Renault Clio 34/67
    Peugeot 307 35/54
    Vauxhall Vectra 28/47

    The Reason:
    Diesel - $1.49/ litre
    Super Unleaded - $1.58/ litre
    Unleaded - $1.50/ litre

Doubt there would be that many low mpg cars on the road in the USA if you had to pay that much.

(You can't really argue that all 1,314,384 Americans who bought a pick-up (~16 million a year) desperately need them for towing)
    Thanks for all the fish

Here's an idea: Don't compare a ****ing diesel microhatch to a ****ing full size sedan. How about comparing a full size sedan to a full size sedan? Why don't you tell me the specs on a big ol Jag and a huge MG and then give me the specs on a cadillac deville or lincoln continental. Let's compare apples to apples, ok? because I'm pretty sure that your golf tdi is pretty ****ing damn close to the goddamned golf Tdi sold here. Congratulations, american cars are still just as ****ing fuel efficient as your faggot ****ing euro cars, because they are the same ****ing thing. dick.
well yes, but see the problem is you are retarded.

now we have that out of the way, let me explain. the original purpose of this thread was to question why americans like big cars. people have been comparing america's favorite cars with europes favorite cars on gas mileage. thats totally different from just comparing a small euro car to an american truck and saying gas mileage on euro cars are better.

euro cars gas mileage isnt better, its just that europeans generally go for smaller cars.

    and why would that be?

becaus they get a better mileage , and why is that important? First because prices are high and secondly because resources are finite.

Furthermore parking spaces are smaller, roads are narrower, cities were build before the arrival of the motorcar and other traffic.

so you are saying, if europeans had wide roads, they would buy big trucks?

it doesnt seem to work like that for aussies

anyway i posted that because the other dude was being retarded.

Also, in America you GET TAX BREAKS FOR DRIVING A HUGE-ASS SUV, BECAUSE IT'S A "COMMERCIAL VEHICLE". If the government didnt encourage people to buy H2s and Excursions, you'd see a helluva lot more sedans, and GM and Ford would actually BUILD A DECENT CAR rather than spending all their cash on trucks. Chrysler/Dodge can do it, but that's because they're OWNED BY MERCEDES, WHICH IS EUROPEAN.
