Probably because when SI actually covered racing and put cars on the cover, you were totally engrossed in avoiding cooties?
Love the images, particularly Jim Kimberly's Air Force pilots helmet, weight lifting belt and red coveralls which likely were dipped in borax. Safety is relative. It's amazing to see the magazine went through at least six masthead re-designs in just a decade! Also interesting that the Daytona photo shows the cars going around the banking clockwise...

That's just it... the track runs counter-clockwise. The photo shows them on the high banks running opposite track direction.
As far as I know the 24 hour race has always run counter clockwise. The pits are infield.
And yes, I was in nappies for those '50s covers too.

Found it... they DID race clockwise for the 6 hour International Sportscar Championship. Here's the results... the Ferrari on the SI cover is probably the Gonzales/Hudson car, followed by the Casner/Lilly TR and one of the Porsches. An interesting lineup of machinery to say the least. Even a few of the NASCAR drivers in the group.
