A very consistent run throughout the season with numerous podium finishes did allow the team to win the GT class championship, beating the top Porsche team, which had won four of the other eight rounds, by a single point. The M3 GT2 was also driven to victory in the 2010 Nüburgring 24 Hours.

With an eye on improving competitiveness, subtle modifications were made to the M3 GT2 for the 2011 season. Chief among these was the addition of a semi-automatic, paddle-operated gearbox. Brand new cars were built both for the Schnitzer and Rahal Letterman Racing teams. These again competed in the ILMS and ALMS championships respectively. Where the races counted for both series (Sebring and Petit Le Mans) the two BMW teams joined forces.

There was instant success in the season opening Sebring 12 Hours where the defending champions won the GT class. The next two ALMS rounds were won by the M3 GT, which cemented a successful title defence. After winning the season opening round, BMW Motorsport also clinched the GT class win at Zhuhai just as in the year before. At the end of the year, BMW placed second in the ILMC standings behind Ferrari.

For the 2012 season, BMW in Europe set their sights on the DTM Championship, leaving the M3 GT2 to be raced exclusively in the ALMS. The year started very well with a one-two victory at the Sebring 12 Hours in the hugely competitive GT class. The renamed BMW Team RLL scored only more class win and eventually ended the year second in the standings. From 2013 onwards, the team switched to a GTE version of the Z4 GT3, scoring a pair of GT class wins.

With back-to-back ALMS titles and an outright win in the Nüburgring 24 Hours, the M3 GT2 was a worthy replacement for the short-lived M3 GTR campaigned nearly a decade earlier. It will probably, however, will be best remembered for the very wild, Jeff Koons art-car that raced at Le Mans in 2010.
