Click here to download printer friendly versionThe NART Daytona had a very difficult baptism, as an accident in practice meant it could not even start the race at Le Mans. Subsequent outings at Sebring and Daytona also did not yield immediate success. The efforts did spark the interest of other privateer racers and further cars were prepared by/for Chinetti. Ahead of the 1971 season further development work led to the introduction of an officially sanctioned 'Competizione' version of the Daytona, which was built for Ferrari by Michelotto. Between 1971 and 1973, fifteen of these cars were constructed in three series of five cars. Michelotto also supplied components to third parties like NART to build up Group 4 specification Daytonas of their own.

Campaigned through much of the 1970s, the various competition Daytonas were hugely successful, scoring outright victories in the Tour de France and also numerous class wins at endurance events like Le Mans. Certainly, the most extreme independently built Group 4 Daytona was a special Spyder commissioned by NART for the 1975 Le Mans. In 1974, the Daytona was replaced by the mid-engined 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, which would also be adapted for use on the track. It proved an altogether more difficult machine to get competitive and it took some direct assistance from the factory and an all-new slippery body from Pininfarina to get the BB sorted.

In retrospect, Ferrari also sanctioned many of the privately built Competizione Daytonas by allowing them to compete in the now defunct Ferrari-Maserati Challenge. For reasons unknown, not all of the Daytonas with period competition history were included. Since the 1970s, several more Daytonas were converted for use on track and/or for very spirited drives through the countryside.
