From the fourth series, introduced in 1961, the DB4 was also available as a Convertible. Also available from 1961 was the Vantage specification engine, which featured a high compressions, triple carburettor equipped version of the 3.7-litre engine, which was good for 266 bhp. The Vantage models were usually fitted with covered headlights.

These covered headlights were derived from the high performance DB4 GT version that was available for competition use from 1959. It was fitted with a thinner gauge aluminium Touring body and a triple Weber carbureted engine that had a claimed output of 302 bhp. The rarest and most sought after version of the DB4 is the Zagato bodied DB4 GT of which just 19 were built between 1960 and 1962. A handful of DB4 Vantages were also fitted with the DB4 GT engine.

In 1963, the DB4 was superseded by the DB5, which was effectively an evolution of the covered headlight DB4 Vantage with a larger, four-litre engine. The DB5 achieved legendary status as James Bond's car of choice. Between 1958 and 1963, Aston Martin built a total of 1,204 examples of the DB4 including the DB4 GT competition cars and 70 Convertibles.
