 Good job Volkswagon

this is one of the coolest things any car company has come out with, espessialy vw. i like most vw's, how they run, how they look, the mileage that the diesels get, it's awesome. this is excatly what needs 2 be produced.
 Diesel or Gas

You guys slamming Diesels need to do your homework. This is just like the old Chevy VS Ford thing. I have been a top gas Technician for many years. Last year I bought a Mercedes diesel. I don't know what took me so long, my father was a Diesel mechanic for bingham county for over 30 years. I drive my Mercedes on 100% peanut oil the way Mr. Diesel designed them to run on as A tribute to my father who died on the 9th of last month. I hope the diesel wins. I hope it blows the doors off of all of them. Why, I have been fighting with gas for years. Engine management systems etc. A direct injected Diesel engine with no computer, running on straight cooking oil will burn 90% cleaner than the best gas engine and all of it's sensors. Plus, there was a Diesel put in service just after WWII in Taiwan that was never shut down for service until about a year and a half ago. How many gas engines can make that claim? Diesel engines have been slow because almost all of the money spent on research has been for gas. I work on million dollar vessels. Some are incredibly fast. Diesel engines. The war we were just in? Massey Fergusen Diesel engines on the vehicles. So, live a little. Put away the old prejiduces and enjoy the new/old technology.
 VW's Rule

VW's Rule!!! And I'm not saying that as a generic comment. VW designers have always taken into consideration what does a specific vehicle need to be the best. In this case an odd body style on an engineered frame and motor, most likely perfect for harsh distance desert driving...Bottom line I hope one of my friends buys it so I can try it out, because it's not practical for me. German Engeneering is still tops in my book. I've had cars from everywhere, being a military man I get to go lots of places and had my share of cars...And Germans have a good reputation for a good reason.

Hey, if I had this car, man I would have fun in a rally !!! but I dont trust Volkswagon ... I always thought they were not reliable !
 full throttle

Johneric, thanks for the comments, I have to say that I am no expert on these type of desert rallies, but I can imagine that you have to go full throttle over longer distances, however speed is relative, and ft might mean that top speed will be nothing compared to what is feasible on tarmac roads. So when off-road topspeed can be obtained with less hp and more torque, then you have a winner (as your stated results clearly show).

Guys, I can tell you that during my time living in South Africa I took part in the Toyota 1000 Desert Race and the Roof of Africa rally which are both endurance events similiar in style to the Paris-Daker albeit considerably shorter. The similarity is in the speed and terrain that one encounters. I wouldn't agree with Henk4 that outright speed is not a factor, with the exception of some technical sections the majority of the racing was full throttle, flat out racing (it's nasty when you hit something and end up rolling 10 or 12 times.). And for MarkT I have to tell you that the majority of the front row finishers were diesels. You have to take the economy issue into account when you're racing 750 kms per day - refuelling stops depending o how lost you get can be a matter of life or death. I would agree that acceleration is not a factor either, the two requirements would be high torque levels for when you get stuck in mud, sand, water, crawling up a 30 degree loose surface, etc and the second requirement is a high top speed. I think the advantages of a diesel become obvious under the above criteria - I still think VW should have had the b***s to enter a showroom class version of the Tourag!.

Theoretically of course MarkT is right, however,in this particular the advantages of torque come into play while driving in rough terrain, you do not need to shift gear so often, you can pull away from low revs, avoiding wheel spin etc. As Paris Dakar is not so much about top speed but rather about getting through, the remark that it will outrun (be at the finish faster) than petrol engines is correct.
 outrun more powerful petrol engines????
MarkT

How does more torque let you outrun a more powerful petrol engine? Lets dispell a common myth. The only time more torque gives you more acceleration is if you have the same gearing. Diesel cars produce peak power at lower revs and have to be higher geared in order to get the same speeds. The only place torque makes a difference is at the wheels, where, ignoring the effects of drivetrain power losses, total wheel power = engine power = torque x wheel revolutions per minute = force transmitted to ground x vehicle speed. So at a given speed the accelerative force that can be transmitted through the wheels depends only on engine power (and since the race car will be geared to operate within the peak power band of the engine almost all of the time is independent of torque). So given that gearing of all race cars is optimised, maximum achievable acceleration is dependent only on power.
fun fun fun til daddy takes the Tarek away

I found out that dreams came true when I looked at the Tarek for the first time. Though it may look a little homely, this is every teenagers dream, an offroading beast that is looking for adventure (who would have thought that it came from Volkswagen?). I only wish that I could take a spin in this beast down in the Bajas.
 Too much like the Schlesser

I'm only sorry that VW did have the trust to enter the VW Tourag themselves. Considering this was a co-development with a company that won the Paris-Dakar outright on three occassions (959 4 X 4) you would have thought the pedigree was already there. I take my hat off to the companies, Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi that run their models in the Show Room classes as well as the Prototype Class.

"according to VW, this car is a sort of ""practice"" for the rally team to get some experience, so that they can enter the new toureg in the 2004 race i saw the similarity to the w12 too, looks pretty cool"""

Is it just me, or is their some similarity with the design of this and the aborted W12 concept from Volkswagen? Still, at least they did a good job at this car, no underdone chassis here!
It doesn?t have to look good

This buggy is outwardly a carbon copy of the things that Schlesser has been using in the past years fitted with the Renault V6 engine (if I am not mistaken). It's remarkable that both cars are rear wheel drive only, seems to be enough for the desert. The outstanding feature of this one of course is the diesel engine, which really shows the direction progress is heading for. A notable advantage, apart from the torque, is relatively small amount of fuel that has to be taken on board, as it will probably run twice the distance compared to a petrol engine.
 looks really strange................

it has that kind of look which seems as if it is from mars. It has a really unpropotioned body and it really looks like a crumpled piece of paperthat has been uncrumpled and what is left is this car but damn nice engine though. 390nm.....wonderful!!!!

A pretty novel idea and nicely carried out. I will be supporting the South African Nissans pioneered by amongst others Giniel de Villiers, but my next fav will definately be this car.
