| Sidepipes !!!!!! |
| Lanoitarri 21-6-2003 |
Did you hear the latest news yet ? The final version of the SLR is going to have two double-sidepipes just behind the front-wheels!! Yeehaw! I've been waiting for such a feature on a sportscar for ages now and after all, It's even going to be on the SLR!! Unbelievable! |
| Final engine = More Power |
| Sir Firekahn 8-5-2003 |
One thing about the engine of the street version: It'll be the known 5.5 litre V8 but the power will be pretty higher than the 560 hp of the Vision. Dr. Hubbert (CEO of Mercedes) said that they may even top the 6 litre V12 of the CL 65 (612hp). Whatever this baby is gonna blow the Carrera GT and maybe the horrible styled Enzo. But who cares about power if you look at the astonishing style of the SLR? |
| its not all about horses under the hood |

"GeaKana, im pretty sure that the real reason why it was not shown at the show last autumn or geneva show this year (march 2003) is simply because the car has taken on too much weight and either mcclaren or merc or both of them are unhappy with the affect its had on their original intentions. I havent heard or read anywhere that they are increasing the horsepower significantly from the released figures of around 550hp / 590lbs ft to compete on terms with the porsche GT. I would like to know where you came by this info. However, first and foremost, it is better to reduce weight rather than generate more horses. I am in agreeement with you and everyone however - this car is going to be fantastic - this is the only new supercar i havent seen in the flesh (e.g. pagani, koeniggsegg, bugatti and porsche GT ive had the pleasure of)and by the pictures, it is by far the most attractive of the lot and probably most practical. i.e. it has amenities that make it a comfortable cruiser and you can see clearly out the back. Furthermore, it has realistic proportions. When i spoke to the chief engineer at bugatti on their stand at the paris show, he laughed and said nothing when i asked him about being able to see out the back of his 700000 car. If i had been a serious punter, i still would have asked the same question - although these things are works of art, they are also there to be driven. There appeared to be less ability to see out the rear 3/4 view in the bugatti than in a diablo. Who in their right minds (apart from Countach drivers) would want to spend all that money on a car when they have to open the door to reverse the car - even the mega-wealthy have to reverse park too! So, i feel we can break out the champagne early such is my confidence in the two companies getting this car spot-on. we've waited four years; so many months more waiting for a perfected drive is ok by me." |

"May I be the first to declare that Mercedes Benz has officially ceased production as an automotive manufacturer, and is now in the business of designing and building ""rolling art"". I'm in love. And to all those who whine about a supposedly serious lack of horsepower, give your head a shake and then do the math!! - GVW of 3086lbs with 557hp out of 5.5 litres = 5.5lbs/hp!! The SLR has a better power to weight ratio than 99.9% of vehicles on the road. Get a life!! - 0 to 100kph(60mph) in 4.2 seconds!! - 320kph(200mph) top speed!! Luckily, those who claim this car lacks power could never afford one of these anyway.......and if it did have more power, those same individuals wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.......... like pearls to swine!!" |

Saw this car being tested on the M25 in the snow at about 10:30 last night, it didn't look like it had been disguised at all. The vents behind the front wheels are now different, they are much bigger, it looks like it could rip your head off at fifty paces!! I passed the car and then let him pass me about 4 times!!! I still can't believe I've seen this car on the road!!! One of the best looking and sounding cars I've had the pleasure of seeing in the flesh. The car I saw was LHD, by the way. |

I must make amends and say that Mercedes Benz, along with the fabulous team at Mclaren, have created a truly amazing, if slightly intimidating, beast in the Vision SLR. The production version, now to be manufactured in right-hand drive (from Wheels magazine, if anyone wants to check me on that) is a true competitor for the worlds fastest car crown. Poor rich people, they have so much choice now, Bugatti or Porsche, or maybe the Merc, Hmmmmmm..... |
| No power?? |
| GTS25t 21-8-2002 |
550hp = no power? I'm quite sure this V8 is one of the more powerful engines ever to be assembled by MB/AMG. There is much more to a car than outright horsepower and many manufacturers have shown that a V12 displacing over 6 litres is not necessary to produce bulk horsepower. I fail to see what the complaint is and would daresay that you will find few convertibles with power approaching these sort of levels from the factory..... |

| not only the engine |
| henk4 6-8-2002 |
speed is not only a result of putting in a bigger engine. Most likely the heavy V12 would undo the balance of the car, and while being fast on the straight line, cornering could become cumbersome. Motor racing has seen so many examples where absolute power did not matter but where the car itself (and the driver) had to do the job (Cooper T51, Lotus 23, Saab 93, Chevron B16 etc.). However I think only very few mortals will be able to fully use the power already installed in this SLR, so I see no reason to complain, apart from the fact that it is very visible a Mercedes. |
