 Room for mid-mounted drive train

Oh, there's plenty of room for that wonderful 3.5 straight 6 and its ZF 5 spd. transaxle. If you look at the accompanying pictures envision the front of the engine almost on the same plane as the front of those side windows. They are not a part of the passenger compartment, which ends directly behind the front seat. The M1 is a truly desirable car which has only recently begun to be appreciated as it should be.

Cheers
Brilliant article about a brilliant car

yeah, I remember the M1 and ProCar series and back then this car was outstanding and the series really captured the interest of many. Still looks great and I lusted after it.

I am glad BMW now realise how good this car is and publicly are honouring and showing it again with justifiable pride.

Pity the V10 3 litre idea was not carried through.
 Interesting...

It's a good article, and I'm glad to see it on UCP. It is interesting to me that the original spec called for a V10 engine, which means that if the current M1 concept were to be powered by the M5 engine it would in a way, correct a historical mishap.

I'm not sure I agree that the M1 looks more modern than the Countach, though that really depends on what Countach you're talking about. I think the original LP400 was so forward thinking that it still looks rather fresh, at least as much as the M1, especially as the former does without the M1's tendency toward slatts.

I'd be interested to know how the gearbox was mounted as there seems little room between the passenger compartment and the rear wheels for an inline-six and a transaxel.
