Here a valuable lesson was learned from the F40 program, which had left some early buyers disappointed as Ferrari broke their promise of a limited run and instead produced as many as they could sell. The F50 was available in two shades of red as well as yellow, silver and black. To save weight, this paint was applied so thinly that the carbon-fibre weave was still visible upon close inspection. Rossa Corsa or Racing Red was by far the most popular option with no fewer than 302 F50s finished in this colour.

GT racing was very popular during the mid-1990s and considering the F50's racing car like construction many hoped to see a replacement for the popular F40 LM. Ferrari did indeed create an F50 GT but by the time it was ready, several major manufacturers had raised the bar considerably by creating purpose-built racing cars and then homologating thinly disguised versions for the road. Rather than face the possible embarrassment of losing on the track, Ferrari decided to scratch the program. The three examples built were sold but under the strict condition that they were never to be raced.

Built between 1995 and 1997, the F50 remains as one of the last pure or analog supercars. It was eventually succeeded by the altogether more complicated Enzo in 2002. Due to its racing car like construction with very few considerations for comfort, the F50 is the purest of all Ferrari supercars. Its design, dictated in large part by the wind-tunnel, has long been considered to be too bland compared to the earlier F40 or subsequent Enzo but many doubters have come around and the F50 is today increasingly sought after.
