Heh-heh... no because they salt the roads (salt=bad for a car's metal).

You may have a point, though. Some of them don't have good traction even on dry roads (500 ft-lbs of torque will do that).

it is not the torque, it is the primitive construction of the car, which gave them very little traction....which of course was good to satisfy some Americans' juvenile preference for burned rubber.

Not only that but period tyres must also help in not having traction at all.

Right. The Polyglas tires didn't have very good traction. One car magazine lowered the 1/4 mile time of a 427 Camaro just by putting wider tires on it (it went from 14.0 seconds to 13.0). And a '69 440 Dodge Dart GTS... 13.7 @ 107 with the original skinny tires to 12.7 @ 112 with wider tires and no other changes.

Torque (low-end torque, that is) was a major factor. One guy I know had wide (about 12") radials tires on his '69 Fairlane 428, and it still would burn rubber almost all the way up a hill.
Let's hear it for juvenile preferences!

It is for me... I won't own a car that can't burn rubber. Because you never know when you have to.

I have never done it, and altough I reckon it would be fun, I don't understand why anyone would not buy a car solely because it can't burn rubber...
